With its strong roots in storytelling and themes of love, prejudice, and resilience, Once on This Island continues to be a beloved classic that resonates with audiences worldwide.

A Tale of Love, Gods, and Destiny

Set on a vibrant Caribbean island, Once on This Island tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who falls in love with a wealthy boy, Daniel Beauxhomme, after saving him from a life-threatening accident. Unbeknownst to her, the island’s gods—Papa Ge, Asaka, Erzulie, and Agwe—are watching, making a wager on whether love or death is stronger. As Ti Moune bravely pursues her love, she faces challenges of class division and societal prejudice. The musical’s heart-wrenching conclusion brings unity to a divided island, creating a timeless and deeply moving narrative.

Originally penned by the acclaimed duo Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (creators of Ragtime and Seussical), Once on This Island has earned numerous accolades, including eight Tony Award nominations during its Broadway debut. The 2018 revival further cemented its status as a theatrical masterpiece, winning the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical and receiving multiple nominations. The West End production was similarly honored, winning the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical.

An All-Star Filipino Cast

This Manila run of Once on This Island features an exceptional lineup of Filipino talent, adding depth and authenticity to the already compelling storyline. Leading the cast are two alternating actresses playing Ti Moune—Thea Astley, known for her work on GMA’s Divas of the Queendom and All Out Sundays, and singer-songwriter Angela Ken. Opposite them, portraying Daniel Beauxhomme, are Sam Concepcion, a multi-talented performer with a string of theater and television credits, and Jef Flores, a Gawad Buhay-winning actor.

Joining them are theater veterans Lorenz Martinez as Papa Ge, Garrett Bolden as Agwe, Radha as Asaka, and Sheila Valderrama-Martinez as Erzulie, alongside a talented ensemble that breathes life into the island’s vibrant community.

A Theatrical Journey Not to Be Missed

With its combination of a stellar cast, award-winning music, and unforgettable storytelling, Once on This Island is poised to be one of the most talked-about productions in Manila’s theater scene this year. The intimate yet powerful narrative will leave audiences captivated and moved, as the tale of Ti Moune serves as a testament to the power of love, sacrifice, and hope.
